I have many people ask how I create and capture videos of ventilator waveforms. In this post I will describe my techniques and introduce a ventilator screen capture contest for my new book Ventilator Graphics: Identifying Patient Ventilator Asynchrony & Optimizing Settings (2nd Ed).
How to Capture Ventilator Screen Shots & Videos
5. Hamilton Data-logger- This software is from Hamilton medical which provides both real time video & data. This I have used for image & video capture additionally trend graphics for research and providing evidence for using a different mode of ventilation.

6. Epiphan VGA Frame Grabber- I use this for video capture on the Maquet FLOW-i & Hamilton G5.

How to Capture Ventilator Screen Shots & Videos
- Smart Phone- I have used both android based phones & my iPhone to capture both videos and pictures of ventilator screens. This is not my first choice due to quality however since it is always on me I have captured images I might have missed using other techniques.
- Advantages- accessibility, able to show the image or video on the device to quantify asynchrony. Can send the image via email or text for collaborations on troubleshooting or requesting ventilator setting or mode changes. Note- this is the only way to obtain video & images of older ventilator platforms.
- Disadvantages- poor image & video quality due to movement & reflections.

2. Flash Drive & PC Adapter- These two pieces are needed for capturing screen shots with the SERVO-i and Hamilton G5. Here are links for better description:

3. USB Drive- Some newer machines have a USB drive to allow for image capture (Hamilton C2, Maquet FLOW-i).

4. VentView Software- This is proprietary software from Draeger medical which can only be used on Draeger ventilators . I use this to capture both video & images.
Worst Modes of MV
- Advantages- great image quality, can keep the flash drive connected to the ventilator.
- Disadvantages- small additional cost, have to carry around the flash card & PC adapter. Only able to capture images.
- Examples:

3. USB Drive- Some newer machines have a USB drive to allow for image capture (Hamilton C2, Maquet FLOW-i).
- Advantages- great image quality, USB drives are common & lower price, the USB drive can be left in place, simple image capture functionality.
- Disadvantages- have to carry USB around,can only capture images.
- Examples:

- Advantages-great video & image capture.
- Disadvantages- software costs, extra equipment (laptop, laptop screen capture software capable of video & images, video editing), interfacing with the ventilators communication port, having to keep a laptop at bedside. Availability I do not know if this is available anymore.

DEADLINE & Fine Print
- Capture screen shots of ventilator asynchrony waveforms (ventilator screen only). Note-these may be image or video.
- Please provide a short description of asynchrony, mode of ventilation, any intervention or correction. The more detail the better.
- No limit for submissions.
- May not be created on a test lung.
- Submit images/videos as attachments to the following email address: ventgraphics2ndedition@gmail.com
- In the email also allow permission for the use of your image/video for my Blog and new book.
CONTEST DETAILS
- Images will be evaluated for quality, description, new or novel image.
- A good description or case study gives your media a higher score.
- Enter photos by deadline (see below) no late entries accepted.
- After I review photos the top three will be chosen & the winners will be emailed.
- Notification may be up to 30 days after contest deadline.
- I will post winners work on my blog as well published in the new book.
- If your image is not in the top (3) I still may use in my Blog.
- Prizes will be distributed after launch of the new book.
